Generative Engine Optimization Agency: GEO Audit Guide

By Rahul Bisht · Cotasks IT Solutions · Published 19 October 2026 · 11 min read
Quick answer
A GEO audit is a structured check of whether AI engines like ChatGPT and Gemini can find your brand, understand it, trust it and quote it. It looks at five things: whether AI crawlers can reach your site, whether your brand is described the same way everywhere online, whether your pages contain passages that are easy to lift as answers, whether credible third parties mention you, and whether you actually show up when real buyers ask real questions. If you want someone to run that audit and fix what it finds, a generative engine optimization agency does exactly that.

Why this matters more in the Gulf than almost anywhere else
If you sell in the UAE, your customers are already asking AI before they ask Google. Microsoft's AI Diffusion Report put UAE working-age AI usage at just over 73% in the second quarter of 2026, the highest in the world. The US sat at 33% and Saudi Arabia at 31% in the same study. In Saudi Arabia, the CST's Saudi Internet Report found 45.2% of internet users now use AI tools, up from 21.5% the year before, and more than 80% of them use it mainly to search for information. ChatGPT is the most downloaded AI app there, with Gemini second.
Read that again. The main reason people open these tools is to look things up. That is your buyer's research phase, now happening inside an answer box where you either get named or you don't exist.
A ranking at position three on Google used to be worth something. Inside a ChatGPT answer there is no position three. There is a short list of sources, and the model quotes from one or two of them.
That is the problem a GEO audit solves.
GEO, AEO and SEO: the short version nobody gave you
People use these terms loosely, so here is how we use them at Cotasks.
- SEO gets your pages ranked in search results.
- AEO (answer engine optimization) shapes your content so it can be picked as the direct answer, in featured snippets, voice results and AI Overviews.
- GEO (generative engine optimization) makes your brand something large language models can retrieve, trust and cite when they write an answer from scratch.
They overlap heavily. Good SEO is still the foundation, because a lot of AI retrieval starts from the same web index. But GEO adds a layer SEO never had to care about: the model is not ranking pages, it is picking passages and deciding which brands to name.
That is why a team that only does classic SEO often misses AI visibility entirely. If you are comparing a generative engine optimization agency against your current SEO provider, ask who has actually tested prompts in ChatGPT and Gemini for your category. Not who has added "AI" to their service page.
How ChatGPT and Gemini actually pick who to cite
Nobody outside OpenAI and Google knows the exact formula, and anyone who claims otherwise is selling you something. But the published research and large citation studies agree on a few patterns.
1. The engine rewrites your question first. A study of five million query fan-outs from April 2026 found ChatGPT averages about 2.1 sub-queries per original prompt. So your page has to answer the follow-up questions too, not only the headline one.
2. Being retrieved often leads to being cited. An October 2026 study of ChatGPT Web across versions 5.2 to 5.5 found that pages retrieved more often across repeated runs were also more likely to be cited. Visibility starts with being findable.
3. Your search index presence matters. ChatGPT's retrieval leans on Bing visibility, so Bing Webmaster Tools is not optional. Gemini and Google AI Overviews lean on Google's index. Both need to be able to crawl and understand you.
4. Content that cites sources, quotes experts and uses statistics gets quoted more. The original Princeton GEO paper (KDD 2024) tested nine tactics on about 10,000 queries. Cite Sources, Quotation Addition and Statistics Addition each produced a 30 to 40 percent relative lift on position-adjusted visibility.
5. Specific beats vague. "We help brands grow" will never be quoted. "Our Dubai clients typically see X within Y weeks, measured in Z" can be. (If you cannot back a number up, do not publish it. Models and people both punish invented stats.)

The GEO audit checklist (15 checks, scored)
Score each item 0 (missing), 1 (partial) or 2 (solid). Maximum is 30. Under 15 means you are mostly invisible. Between 15 and 22 means you are patchy. Above 22 means you are competitive and the work is about defending and widening your lead.
A. Access: can AI engines reach you?
| # | Check | What good looks like |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Crawler access | robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User (live answers), and you have made a deliberate choice on GPTBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot. |
| 2 | Indexation in Bing and Google | Verified in both Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Key pages indexed, sitemap submitted. |
| 3 | Rendering and speed | Core copy is in the HTML, not hidden behind scripts. Pages load fast on mobile. |
| 4 | Clean technical basics | No broken canonicals, no redirect chains, no accidental noindex on service pages. |
B. Entity: do machines know who you are?
| # | Check | What good looks like |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | Consistent brand facts | Name, address, services, founding year and markets are identical on your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories. |
| 6 | Organization and Service schema | JSON-LD with sameAs links, areaServed (UAE, KSA, USA and so on) and named services. |
| 7 | Named authors | Real people with bios, credentials and LinkedIn profiles on every article. |
| 8 | Wikipedia, Wikidata or equivalent | For larger brands, an entity record. For smaller ones, strong profiles on platforms models already trust. |
C. Content: can a model lift your answer?
| # | Check | What good looks like |
|---|---|---|
| 9 | Answer-first structure | Each key page opens with a 40 to 60 word direct answer, then expands. |
| 10 | Question-led headings | H2s and H3s phrased like the questions buyers type into ChatGPT. |
| 11 | Evidence density | Real numbers, dated, with sources named in the text. |
| 12 | Freshness | Visible published and updated dates, and content that mentions the current year and current realities (for example White Friday, Ramadan trading, US Q4). |
D. Authority and proof
| # | Check | What good looks like |
|---|---|---|
| 13 | Third-party mentions | Listings and reviews on platforms like Clutch, G2, Google, Trustpilot, plus press and industry mentions. |
| 14 | Real case studies | Named clients (with permission), clear scope, measurable outcomes. |
E. Measurement
| # | Check | What good looks like |
|---|---|---|
| 15 | A repeatable prompt test | A fixed list of prompts run monthly across ChatGPT and Gemini, with mentions, citations and sentiment logged. |

This is the part most guides skip. You can do a rough version yourself.
Step 1. Build a prompt list (20 to 30 prompts). Split them into three buckets:
- Category prompts: "best generative engine optimization agency in Dubai", "who can help my UAE brand show up in ChatGPT"
- Comparison prompts: "AEO agency vs SEO agency for ecommerce", "[your brand] vs [competitor]"
- Problem prompts: "how to get cited in ChatGPT", "why isn't my business showing in AI answers"
Step 2. Run each prompt in ChatGPT and Gemini, logged out and logged in, in English and Arabic. Answers change run to run, so run each one at least three times.
Step 3. Log what you see. For every prompt record whether you were mentioned, whether you were linked, which competitors appeared, and which sources the engine leaned on.
Step 4. Look at the sources, not just the names. If the same three directories and two publications keep appearing, those are your real targets. Getting listed or mentioned there is often faster than rewriting your own site.
Step 5. Score yourself. Share of prompts where you appear, share where you are linked, and whether the description of you is accurate. Those three numbers are your baseline.
You will probably find two uncomfortable things. Competitors you consider weaker are getting named, and the AI's description of your own business is sometimes wrong. Both are fixable.

GCC-specific checks most global guides miss
Generic GEO advice is written for a US audience. If you sell in the Gulf, add these. Our Dubai GEO audit checklist goes deeper on the local side.
- Arabic and English parity. If your Arabic pages are thin translations, Gemini and ChatGPT will have far less to quote for Arabic prompts. Write Arabic content natively, with proper hreflang (ar-AE, en-AE, ar-SA, en-SA) and the same facts in both languages.
- Name variants. Brands in the region often appear in Arabic script, transliterated, and shortened. If those variants are inconsistent, models can split you into several half-entities. Pick the canonical forms and use them everywhere.
- Local proof. Google Business Profile for each emirate or city you serve, trade licence details where appropriate, and reviews from local customers. AI answers about "best X in Dubai" lean heavily on local signals.
- Local currency and context. Price in AED or SAR where you can. Mention Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh or Jeddah in real context, not keyword stuffing.
- Seasonal freshness. White Friday, Ramadan, Eid and summer slowdowns shape what people ask and when. Dated, seasonal content signals you are current.
- Marketplace footprint. For ecommerce brands, consistent listings across Amazon, Noon and Namshi feed the same entity picture that AI engines assemble. More on this in our guide to AEO for ecommerce brands in the UAE.

US-specific checks
The fundamentals are the same, but the competitive landscape is different.
- Review depth. US buyers and AI engines both lean on volume and recency of Google, Yelp, G2 and Trustpilot reviews, depending on your category. Here is how to get more Google reviews the right way.
- Bing visibility. Because ChatGPT retrieval leans on Bing, many US brands that ignored Bing for a decade are now invisible in ChatGPT for no good reason.
- State and city pages. If you serve local markets, each needs real, unique content, not templated clones.
- Industry directories and press. Category-specific listings and trade publications carry real weight as third-party validation.
- Higher competition. More brands are already investing in GEO in the US. Expect to need a longer runway and a clearer niche. If you sell products online, start with AEO for US ecommerce brands.
What a generative engine optimization agency actually does
Strip away the buzzwords and the work falls into five buckets:
- Audit and baseline. The 15-point check above plus prompt testing across engines and languages.
- Technical fixes. Crawler access, schema, indexation, speed, clean architecture.
- Content rebuilds. Answer-first rewrites of your money pages, new question-led content, proper sourcing and expert quotes.
- Authority building. Directory listings, reviews, digital PR and partnerships that give models reasons to trust you.
- Monitoring and iteration. Monthly prompt tracking, referral analysis (ChatGPT appends utm_source=chatgpt.com to links, so you can see those visits in analytics) and content updates.
At Cotasks this sits alongside our SEO, marketplace and performance work, because AI visibility rarely lives in isolation. Cotasks is a Google Partner and Amazon SPN Partner with teams serving the UAE, USA, UK, Saudi Arabia, Australia and India.
How to choose a GEO or AEO agency in Dubai (or anywhere)
Whether you pick us or someone else, ask these seven questions:
- Can you show me how my brand appears in ChatGPT and Gemini today, before we start?
- How do you handle Arabic and English separately?
- Which prompts will you track, and how often?
- What will you do in month one, and what will I be able to see?
- Who writes the content, and how are claims sourced?
- How do you measure success beyond "you rank"?
- Will you tell me what you cannot control?
The last one matters most. Any honest agency will tell you nobody can guarantee a citation. AI answers vary from run to run, models update, and what works today shifts. What an agency can promise is a clear baseline, a documented plan, disciplined execution and transparent reporting. Be wary of anyone promising "#1 in ChatGPT".

Mistakes we see all the time
- Blocking every AI crawler by default, then wondering why nobody cites you.
- Publishing generic "ultimate guides" with no data, no author and no opinion.
- Treating GEO as a one-time project instead of a monthly habit.
- Translating English pages into Arabic with a tool and calling it localisation.
- Chasing keywords while ignoring what the AI actually says about the brand.
- Faking statistics. Models and humans both catch this eventually.

The bottom line
AI search is not coming. In the UAE it is already the default way a large share of buyers start their research, and Saudi Arabia is moving the same way fast. The brands that get named in ChatGPT and Gemini over the next year will mostly be the ones that did boring, careful work early: clean access, consistent facts, quotable pages and real proof.
You can start with the checklist above today. If you would rather have a team do the audit and the fixing, a generative engine optimization agency that understands both the GCC and US markets can compress months of trial and error.
