Amazon FBA Peak Surcharge 2026–27: Real Cost Per Unit

·By Rahul Bisht, Cotasks IT Solutions

By Rahul Bisht · Cotasks IT Solutions · Last verified October 20, 2026

Quick answer: Amazon's FBA holiday peak fulfillment fee (sellers call it the peak surcharge) applies to every unit that leaves a fulfillment center between October 15, 2026 and January 14, 2027. In the US it adds about $0.32 per unit on average, the same average increase as last year. A 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge is charged on top of it, so the average unit now costs roughly $0.25 more to fulfill than at last year's peak. Your exact number depends on size tier, weight, apparel status and price band.

What is the Amazon FBA holiday peak surcharge?

The peak surcharge is a temporary uplift on the fulfillment fee Amazon charges for picking, packing and shipping each FBA unit during the busiest stretch of the year. Amazon's official name is "holiday peak fulfillment fee." Sellers, 3PLs and prep-service blogs also say "peak surcharge," "peak fee" or "peak season fees." They all mean the same charge.

The detail that catches sellers out is timing. FBA fulfillment fees are charged when a unit leaves the fulfillment center, so an order placed on October 14 that ships on October 15 pays the peak rate, as AMZ Prep's breakdown explains. As of today, October 20, the peak window is already live.

Why "$0.32 per unit" understates your real cost

The $0.32 figure is only the seasonal uplift. It is not your fulfillment fee, and it is not the only increase hitting sellers this year. Three layers now stack on the same unit:

LayerIn effectAverage impact (US)
Base FBA fee updateSince January 15, 2026+$0.08 per unit
Fuel and logistics surchargeSince April 17, 2026. I found no announced end date.3.5% of the fulfillment fee, about $0.17 per unit
Holiday peak feeOctober 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027+$0.32 per unit

The base-fee and fuel averages are as reported by Flow Space, citing Amazon. Stack them and a typical unit costs roughly $0.25 more than at last year's peak (the peak uplift itself did not change) and roughly $0.57 more than at 2025 off-peak rates. These are averages across different catalog mixes, so treat them as a direction, not a forecast for your SKUs.

The average also hides a wide spread. Seller-tool sites report tier-level peak increases from about $0.19 on small standard items to about $2.81 on oversized goods like televisions, per figures from EcomCrew relayed by Atomix Logistics. A brand selling mostly small, light products and a brand selling bulky ones are paying very different peak fees under the same headline.

2026–2027 US peak rate examples

These rows come from the 2026–2027 US peak rate card compiled by AMZ Prep from Amazon's published rates. They exclude the 3.5% surcharge. Always confirm your own SKUs in Seller Central, which is the authoritative source.

Size tier and weightUnder $10$10–$50Over $50
Small standard, 2 oz or less$2.62$3.51$3.77
Large standard, 12+ to 16 oz$4.07$4.89$5.15
Large standard, 3+ to 20 lb (plus $0.08 per extra 4 oz above 3 lb)$6.69$7.51$7.77
Large standard apparel, 12+ to 16 oz$4.69$5.51$5.77
Large bulky, up to 50 lb$9.62$10.39$10.39
Extra-large, up to 50 lb$28.29$29.06$29.06

Worked example: what peak does to a $29.99 product

Here is an illustrative unit. The fee comes from the rate card above. The other inputs are assumptions you should replace with your own.

  • Product: large standard, 12–16 oz, priced at $29.99 (the $10–$50 band)
  • Peak fulfillment fee: $4.89 (rate card). Non-peak fee assumed at $4.57, which is the peak fee minus the $0.32 average uplift. Your tier's real uplift may differ.
  • Referral fee: 15% (assumed category rate)
  • Landed cost including inbound: $9.00 (assumed)
Per unitNon-peakPeak
Fulfillment fee$4.57$4.89
Plus 3.5% fuel surcharge$4.73$5.06
Referral fee (15%)$4.50$4.50
Landed cost$9.00$9.00
Contribution before ads$11.76 (39.2%)$11.43 (38.1%)

The peak fee costs this unit $0.33, or about 1.1 points of margin. That is survivable at $30. The same $0.33 bites harder as price falls:

Selling priceMargin points lost to peak (average uplift plus 3.5%)
$152.2
$201.7
$301.1
$500.7

To hold your contribution in dollars at a 15% referral fee, the price would need to rise by about $0.39 per unit. Whether the market lets you is a different question, which is why the tactics below start with where the fee actually hurts.

8 ways to protect your margin this peak

  1. Run the numbers by SKU, not by average. Pull the Fee and Economics Preview report and compare peak against non-peak per SKU. Start with your top volume lines, where a few cents per unit compounds. At 10,000 units, the $0.32 average alone is about $3,200, or about $3,310 with the 3.5% surcharge.
  2. Reprice only the SKUs that need it, by the exact delta. A blanket price rise punishes SKUs that barely moved and may cost you conversion. Add the peak delta, divide by one minus your referral rate, and adjust only where contribution falls below your floor.
  3. Recheck deal depth. If you locked Black Friday or Cyber Monday deal prices using 2025 fee math, they may now sit closer to break-even. Amazon lists deal fees at $100 per promotion plus 1.5% of promotional sales, capped at $5,000, and the BFCM submission window ran July 8 to October 20. Our Amazon deals and promotions service covers pricing guardrails.
  4. Watch the price-band cliffs. The fee steps up at $10 and $50. For a 12–16 oz large standard unit, the peak fee is $4.07 under $10 and $4.89 from $10 to $50, a $0.82 jump. A $10.49 item moved to $9.99 gives up about $0.43 of net revenue after a 15% referral fee but saves about $0.85 in fulfillment fee, before any change in conversion. This only works near the edge. Dropping from $14 to $9.99 loses far more than it saves.
  5. Audit dimensions, weight and packaging. A small packaging change can move a unit to a cheaper size tier or lower its dimensional weight. Eligible products can also qualify for Amazon's Ships in Product Packaging discount, so confirm qualification before putting savings in your forecast.
  6. Place inventory early and deliberately. Amazon says its fulfillment centers prioritize receiving in September and October, then shift to customer orders in November and December, so capacity limits can tighten. Its Black Friday Week and Cyber Monday arrival deadlines are October 14 for AWD, October 21 for FBA with minimal shipment splits and October 28 for FBA with Amazon-optimized splits. For buffer stock, Amazon's Warehousing and Distribution (AWD) with auto-replenishment keeps the off-peak monthly storage rate through October 31, 2026.
  7. Avoid trading one fee for another. Staying lean on stock to dodge Q4 storage can trigger low-inventory-level fees, which are separate from the peak fee. Plan weeks of cover by SKU. Our holiday inventory planning guide for the USA and FBA inventory management service go deeper.
  8. Tighten ad spend before it competes with the fee. Every wasted click lands on top of a thinner unit margin. Use the Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2026 Amazon PPC checklist and our Amazon PPC management service, and see the Prime Deal Days post-mortem for numbers worth copying.

For bulky or slow-moving SKUs where the fee stack stays punishing, compare fulfillment options on full landed cost. Our Walmart WFS vs Amazon FBA 2026 comparison is a starting point.

2027 outlook: what changes on January 15 and what to model now

Here is what is known as of October 20, 2026:

  • Peak rates end January 14, 2027. Non-peak fulfillment rates resume January 15, 2027.
  • The 3.5% fuel surcharge does not end with peak. Amazon's announcement gives no end date, and sellers in the announcement thread are already asking when it will go away.
  • Amazon has not announced 2027 FBA rates. The 2026 base update took effect January 15, 2026, so watch Seller Central for a 2027 update around the turn of the year. Treat any 2027 numbers you see online before then as forecasts.
  • Peak fees look like a fixture. Amazon has used the same October 15 to January 14 window for two years running, so assume another peak window next holiday season, with rates not yet published.

Because nothing is announced, stress-test instead of guessing. The table below uses the 3.5% surcharge and is an illustration, not a prediction:

Planning scenarioPeak uplift per unitExtra cost per 10,000 units
Unchanged from 2026$0.32about $3,310
25% higher$0.40about $4,140
50% higher$0.48about $4,970

If your 2027 holiday plan only works in the first row, it is fragile.

Beyond the US: Canada, UK and Germany

Canada follows the same October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027 window. AMZ Prep, citing Amazon, reports an average increase of about CAD $0.39 per unit, with the 3.5% surcharge also applying. For the UK and Germany, Shoplazza reports that Amazon confirmed a peak season fulfillment fee for the same dates, with oversize products, Low-Price FBA items and some cross-border EU orders exempt. Check Seller Central Europe for your rates. If you sell in these markets, see our Amazon account management for Canada and for the UK.

Your peak-fee action calendar

  • October 21: FBA arrival deadline (minimal shipment splits) for Prime-badge eligibility during Black Friday Week and Cyber Monday
  • October 28: FBA arrival deadline (Amazon-optimized shipment splits)
  • November and December: Fulfillment centers shift from receiving to order processing, so capacity limits can be lower
  • January 14, 2027: Last day of peak rates
  • January 15, 2027: Non-peak rates resume. Watch for Amazon's next fee update.

FAQs

Tap a question to open the answer.

When does the Amazon FBA holiday peak fee start and end in 2026?
It applies from October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027. Non-peak fulfillment rates resume on January 15, 2027. Amazon applies the fee to FBA, Remote Fulfillment with FBA, Multi-Channel Fulfillment and Buy with Prime.
How much is the Amazon FBA peak surcharge per unit in 2026?
Amazon says the increase averages about $0.32 per unit in the US. The actual amount depends on size tier, weight, apparel status and price band, and a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge is charged on top.
Did Amazon raise holiday peak fees for 2026–2027?
The seasonal per-unit increase is unchanged from last year at about $0.32 on average. Total costs are still higher because US base FBA fees rose by about $0.08 per unit and the 3.5% surcharge now applies on top.
Is the peak fee based on order date or ship date?
Ship date. FBA fees are charged when a unit leaves the fulfillment center. An order placed on October 14 that ships on October 15 or later can be charged the peak rate.
Does the 3.5% fuel surcharge apply during peak?
Yes. Amazon says the fuel and logistics-related surcharge applies on top of holiday peak fulfillment fees, so include it as a separate line in your margin model.
How do I find my exact peak fee per SKU?
Use Seller Central's Revenue Calculator, Profit Analytics dashboard or Fee and Economics Preview report. Amazon has loaded the 2026 peak rates into these tools, so you can compare peak against non-peak by SKU.
Will there be an FBA peak fee in 2027?
Amazon has not announced 2027 rates. It has used the same October 15 to January 14 window two years in a row, so the safe planning assumption is another peak window next holiday season, with rates still to be published.
